swedish christmas embroidery

Look at this absolutely beautiful vintage Swedish Christmas embroidery I saw at the home of a friend today. It was her mother's and is very old. I loved the colours and the simple stitching. God Jul!

How lovely! Those colours are so subtle yet bright aren't they?

that is just beautiful! I read somewhere that St Stephans Day is celebrated on 26 December in Scandinavia, and that there is a tradition that St Stephan was a stable boy, hence the images of horses...

Aren't they gorgeous? The blue background has obviously faded but I don't know about the threads. It's a lovely combination, anyway.

Ah, that's interesting, I didn't know that. I must ask my friend...

Yes, Sue, that is very lovely embroidery. I do like the softness of the colors of the fabric and the stitches. Aren't those horses fine? Now I will remember what Alison has written about St Stephen's Day, too.

Thank you all very much. And a very Happy 2016, too. xo
